Data corruption is the damage of info due to various software or hardware fails. After a file is damaged, it will no longer function properly, so an app will not start or will give errors, a text file can be partially or completely unreadable, an archive file will be impossible to open and then unpack, etc. Silent data corruption is the process of info getting harmed without any acknowledgement by the system or an administrator, that makes it a significant problem for web hosting servers as fails are more likely to occur on larger hard disks where large volumes of info are stored. In case a drive is part of a RAID and the info on it is duplicated on other drives for redundancy, it's likely that the bad file will be treated as a regular one and will be copied on all the drives, making the damage permanent. Lots of the file systems that operate on web servers these days often are not able to find corrupted files in real time or they need time-consuming system checks through which the server isn't functioning.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Cloud Hosting
If you host your websites in a cloud hosting account with our firm, you don't need to worry about your data ever getting damaged. We can ensure that as our cloud hosting platform uses the state-of-the-art ZFS file system. The latter is the only file system which uses checksums, or unique digital fingerprints, for every single file. All the info that you upload will be saved in a RAID i.e. simultaneously on many different SSD drives. All the file systems synchronize the files between the different drives using this kind of a setup, but there's no real warranty that a file won't be corrupted. This could occur at the time of the writing process on any drive and then a corrupted copy may be copied on the other drives. What makes the difference on our platform is the fact that ZFS examines the checksums of all files on all of the drives in real time and when a corrupted file is found, it's substituted with a good copy with the correct checksum from another drive. This way, your info will stay unharmed no matter what, even if an entire drive fails.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you acquire one of our semi-dedicated server plans, you will not have to worry about silent data corruption because we use ZFS - a high level file system that keeps track of all files in real time. Every time you upload a file to your website hosting account, ZFS will assign a unique digital fingerprint to it - the so-called checksum. That file will be synced between several SSD drives for redundancy, so if a drive fails, the other ones will take control. ZFS compares the checksum of all of the copies on the different drives and if it detects a corrupted copy, it replaces it with a healthy one from a different drive. This is done immediately, so there will be no risk for any part of your content at any moment. In comparison, other file systems perform checks only after a system failure, but since they don't use anything similar to the checksums that ZFS uses, they will not detect silently corrupted files, so a corrupted copy could be replicated on the other disks as well and you may lose important data. As this isn't the case with ZFS, we warrant the integrity of each file you upload no matter what.
